It is certainly worthwhile on sunny, winter days visiting the trails when the trees, absent of foliage, cannot obscure the views. In this way, the man-made landscape of Zalaegerszeg is shown bare in its design.
A network of three trails has been established by the Local Government of Zalaegerszeg City. All the trails start out from the tourist map in front of Imre Izsák Primary School (1-3, Szivárvány tér, Zalaegerszeg)
Green trail: the shortest route, only eight kilometres long, passes by the best-known sights of the district: the chapels on Csácsi and Henye Hills, the Vari well and the petting zoo as well as the St Sebastian Roman Catholic church. Highly recommended to novice hikers since the route can be completed in only two and a half hours.
Blue trail: this route, longer than the former, stretching over 13.9 kilometres visits the three hills: Csortán, Pipa Hill and Hosszúhegy. We recommend it to experienced hikers since they should plan four hours for this route.
Red trail: the longest route with its 23.1 kilometres passes through Pethőhenye where we can visit the St. Stephen Church built according to the plans of the architect Imre Makovecz. The red trail passes by the Maria Spring or Csurgó Well situated in the proximity of Kisfaludi Hill.
This beautiful place not only attracts gastronomists foraging for new spring shoots of wild garlic but is a long-established and popular destination for ramblers. Experienced hikers can complete the hike in about seven hours.
Trailblazer signs placed along the routes help hikers orient themselves. Tourists can learn more about the special sights such as the chapel on Csácsi Hill, the house of worship on Henye Hill, the legend of the Kisfaludi castle, the flood area of the Zala River and the flora, including the wild garlic, and fauna of Zala forests on the seven large information boards.
Similarly to Gully Road, the hiking trails of Fern Road also await nature lovers. The beautiful countryside of Bozsok Hill, Christmas Hill, Old Hill, White Hill and Avas (Oaș) Hill can be explored by taking any of the hiking trails.
